Can you name the fastest selling book in history? Yes, it’s Harry Potter. Harry Potter is a name that needs no introduction .In fact there are only very few fictional characters as popular as Harry Potter. Harry Potter’s birthday falls on July 31 same as J.K Rowling, his creator. Joanne Rowling or J.K Rowling as we know her became popular with the Harry Potter series published between 1997 and 2007.
From the time the first book in Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was published in 1997 to the last one, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in 2007, J.K Rowling made Harry Potter the favourite of the children all around the world. The story of Harry Potter takes place in a fantasy world but the problems encountered by Harry are all human. Everyone can relate to it. Harry Potter was an orphan boy living with his uncle and aunt. He is constantly abused by them and bullied by their son Dudley. And then just like in fairy tales, on his eleventh birthday he learns that his parents were wizards. The surprise does not end there. He learns about the murder of his parents by Lord Voldemort and how he has survived the attack. Thus began the series of Harry Potter adventures which has thrilled the children and adults alike.
Harry Potter is not just a story of magic. The thick friendship between Harry, Hermione Ganger and Ronald Weasley is something all children can relate to. The books and film adaptations of Harry Potter series holds many records which shows how popular they are. The Harry Potter series have sold more than 500 million copies and have been translated into almost 80 languages including Malayalam. The last four books of series have consecutively set record for the fastest selling books in history.
The last book in the series sold 8.4 million copies in the first 24 hours of its release. The film adaptations were also a huge success. The highest grossing Harry Potter movie Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows part 2 is one of the highest grossing films in history. Over the years Harry Potter has grown so is his popularity and fans. Every year Harry Potter day is celebrated. May 2, the date in which Harry defeated Lord Valdemort is celebrated among the circles of Harry Potter fans. Hats off J.K Rowling for giving us Harry Potter. After the Harry Potter series Rowling has written five books for adult readers but she will always be known as the creator of Harry Potter.
