Agreement between Subject and Verb 3
One of the most confusing instances of subject verb agreement is when the verb follows the phrase ‘One of the’. The confusing part is that the there is a plural noun that comes before the verb.
See this sentence: One of the boys is a singer.
It is really misleading, especially for a non-native English speaker, when plural noun boys is followed by is. Many end up using are. But, in fact, the real number of the subject is singular (One boy); and therefore, the use of the verb in the sentence is correct.
One of the apples is rotten.
Here is one of the men who were working in the field.
One of the reasons I hate pizzas is their bland taste.
It should also be noted that after the phrase One of the, the noun should be plural. It is wrong to say One of the apple is rotten.
Now look at this: One of those romantic accidents that occur only in movies happened to me at the railway station.
Should it be occur, or occurs? The sentence is correct because the verb occur refers to the plural noun accidents.
The verb that corresponds to one is happened. Please note that the relative pronoun that links occur to accidents.
Can you correct mistakes, if any, in the following sentences?
One of the chief use of a fat book is to throw at you enemies.
One of the most annoying children who come to the park are the ones wearing green shirt and matching trousers.
